Tips for Lapbooking Success!

Ok, so some of you might feel overwhelmed about adding ANOTHER thing to your school day!  I totally understand – here are a few tips that have made lapbooking through CC fun and simple in our home:

OPTION 1: A little each day

1.  Read through the lapbook pages, and identify which pages you will want on which type of paper and color.  Print the memory work pages off (the extras you can add at the end, or as you go if you are looking for supplements for that week)

2. If you are working on a book that coincides with what you are currently studying, have the kids cut out the objects for that week on one day (basically maybe 6 or 7 items).

3. The next day, have them fill in the blanks for 1/2 of them, and the next day have them fill in the blanks for the other 1/2.  (This all will take less than ten minutes each day.) This basically works right into your review!

3. Play your memory work CD as you cut and write – the kids absorb it even if you are not drilling them!

4. Just keep your items together – don’t glue them into the book until the end of the 6 weeks!

OPTION 2: One day a week!

1. Spend one afternoon printing and cutting out everything.  Put the pieces in a manilla envelope. Don’t forget to play the memory work CD to review while you cut!

2. One day a week, pull out all the memory items for that week (usually only about 4-5 of them require coloring or brief fill-in-the blank). Spend lss than 30 minutes filling out all the items for that week! This is also a great way to review everything you have covered for the week!  I would reccomend waiting until the end of your CC week and challenge your kids to fill it all out by memory if they can!  For my 4 year old in Foundations, he tells me what he has memorized and I write!  The older one writes her own.

It really is super-easy and fun – and gives you one more way to get a little “hands on” with the memory work!

TIPS FOR WORKING ON WEEKS ALREADY COVERED:

If you are going back to review weeks already covered, start by printing and coloring the material.  I have found that once the items are cut, it is very easy to use the items as “filler” in any school day.  For example, if my daughter finishes her math but I am still working on reading with my son, she can pick an item from the manilla lapbook folder and work on it for a couple of minutes until we are already to move on.  Review built right in!

The books come together quite quickly.  In reality, once everything is cut, I would think you could easily assemble a book in an afternoon if desired.  Then pull them off the shelves for review!

What are some great ways your family has used the lapbooks for review?
