Character study is such an important part of our homeschool studies. In fact, early in the school year last year, I had reduced the amount of other studies we were doing to focus on some character and habit training. I just felt strongly that if we focused on character and habits, the rest would go more smoothly. While my kids are still crazy bundles of energy and their sinful-nature is still in tow, I did feel like we had some great gains last year in the way our family works together … [Read more...]
The Race of Life
There's this race that we all run. And we start out even, toeing the same old line everyone else stands behind. On the day of our birth, the pistol fires, and we run. At the beginning, the race is easy. We are oblivious to finish lines, and who is going faster than who, and what obstacles might lie ahead. We just run. We think it will always be this way - an easy gait, an able body. But the race goes on, and the sun begins to set on that day, that season. The darkness sets in. Obstacles … [Read more...]
When You’re Wondering Who Sustains You….
After hearing from so many of you how much you loved hearing about the Mama Robin outside our front window, I just knew I had to find a way to let you all see this beautiful miracle that has captivated my heart. The video below of the Mama Robin tending to her flock was recorded in about 5 minutes. She worked busily all day to feed her young - they are hungry little buggers! (I can relate!) Did you know that one Robin can eat as much as 14 FEET of earthworms a … [Read more...]
New Birth {And…Last Chance for the Lapbook Giveaway!}
She chose wisely among the twigs and sticks - picking them up one-by-one and carrying them to the top of the pillar. After a small pile was formed, she would add a piece and nestle down into them, rubbing the pieces together against themselves trying to get them to tangle. It was the start of her nest. The victory was short-lived, for try-as-she-might, the nest beginnings would fall down off of the top of the pillar and onto the ledge below. I thought she had given up when I crept … [Read more...]

Soothing Suffering…
A post from the archives... Every family had them - in fact, they were so common that the questions surrounding them remained fixed: What kind? Or when? Or when again? Or who? And of course, the ever-present one....why? Scars. Physical or emotional - no one was without. It was so common back then, a time when many children died in infancy from illnesses preventable in today's terms. When a day's work exposed you to dangerous situations, hard toil, and little provision. And yet, … [Read more...]
Letting Go of the Labels…
A post from the archives.... I passed a hill the other day - a naked mound with five trees. Nearby, a forest of trees stood mocking the vacant hillside that once harbored the same forest. Years ago stripped bare of all trees but five, it stands exposed. I thought of what the hillside was missing - about all it had lost. How time and man had decided to take away that which God had first blessed its ground with. I mourned for the hill in a way, identifying with the feeling of what could have … [Read more...]
